What is the difference between LIVE and Heat Treated Akkermansia
- AFU (Active Florison Units): Measures the activity of live bacteria, emphasizing their functional capacity in the body.
- TFU (Treated Form Units): Refers to less expensive heat-treated or non-viable bacteria (i.e., the bacteria are no longer alive) that can still have some benefits much like probiotics, which are also dead. Since the bacteria are not alive, they cannot colonize the gut or interact with the gut environment in the same way live bacteria can. Most of the Akkermansia on the US market are of the heat treated non viable kind.
- CFU (Colony-Forming Units): A count of viable live bacteria capable of forming colonies in a petri dish.
